The North Central RC&D, in partnership with the Middle Niobrara NRD, has secured funding for a tire amnesty event, made possible by a Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy.
The Amnesty will be held in Valentine, Nebraska. The tires will be collected in the City of Valentine's empty lot east of the Valentine High School.
Tires will be collected on Wednesday, April 30th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Thursday, May 1st, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The event will close early upon the collection of 200 tons of tires.
Residents of all six counties of the RC&D, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, and Rock, are encouraged to bring their scrap tires! Tire retailers are not allowed to participate. There will be no assistance unloading the tires, so please plan accordingly.
All sizes of car, truck, pivot, semi, and tractor tires will be accepted. No rims will be accepted. For smaller loads, please bring a count of each type of tire. For larger loads, please bring a total weight. A scale is available at Niobrara Valley Feed, located on West Highway 20. If you have a large quantity of tires, please contact the North Central RC&D prior to the event.
Besides reducing the waste that ends up in landfills, it conserves natural resources and prevents environmental hazards. Tires collected at this event will be recycled by Champlin Tire Recycling, Inc., Concordia, Kansas. Salvageable tire casings are repaired and retreaded in their plant. Tractor and large tire sidewalls are cut and turned into silage covers or turned inside out for feed bunks. Tires are also processed into by-products used in manufacturing park benches and picnic tables.
